Case description:

18-year-old serving in Cuba's compulsory military service who committed suicide with the rifle given to him to guard a prison. He had never had a rifle in his hands and had been left alone; his father believes that he must have panicked or was overcome with anxiety. His son had started the military service on June 3, 2021, had trained for two weeks and, after a three-day home visit (pass), had been assigned to guard the prison. He was first in anti-COVID isolation for 12 days and, after testing negative, had been sent to guard a three-story high tower. He took his own life that day. Cuban recruits are subjected to harsh military discipline, often in remote units in very poor conditions, and to hard and long work in agriculture and other tasks without remuneration.

Joven cubano de 18 años que se suicidó con un rifle que le entregaron para realizar una guardia mientras se desempeñaba en el Servicio Militar Activo (SMA) de Cuba en la prisión Combinado del Sur de Matanzas. "Lo pusieron a hacer guardia en las torres del Combinado sin haber tenido nunca un rifle en sus manos y lo dejaron solo y parece que cogió pánico o ansiedad y se quitó la vida, después de solo 13 días allí", su padre, Alfredo González, dijo a CiberCuba. González explicó al diario independiente que su hijo comenzó en el SMA el 3 de junio de este año. Pasó dos semanas de preparación en una unidad miliar y, el 19 de junio, le dieron un pase de tres días, hasta el 22. Pero no volvió al mismo sitio sino al centro penitenciario Combinado del Sur. Allí lo sometieron a un período de aislamiento, como medida de prevención del coronavirus, y cuando se comprobó que no estaba contagiado, el 4 de julio, lo mandaron a una torre de tres pisos de altura a realizar una guardia. Ese mismo día se quitó la vida.
