Case description:

Cuban human rights activist with HIV who in 2020 had served seven months of provisional imprisonment in the penitentiary center for HIV patients in Güines, Mayabeque, for publicly protesting the lack of electricity in his community. The lack of medical care, medication, and insufficient nutrition worsened his condition. Admitted to the Instituto de Medicina Tropical Pedro Kourí, he died after four months.
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) asked the Cuban government about his death from an alleged lack of medical care.

Activista anticastrista que cumplió siete meses de prisión provisional en el centro penitenciario para pacientes con VIH de Güines, Mayabeque en 2020, por protestar públicamente por la falta de electricidad en su comunidad. Tras ser liberado, la “inestabilidad en el suministro de medicamentos y la falta de una alimentación suficiente” empeoraron su estado de salud y tuvo que ser ingresado en el Instituto de Medicina Tropical Pedro Kourí, donde falleció tras permanecer allí cuatro meses.  La Comisión Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) lamentó el fallecimiento de Herrera Bones y pidió al Estado cubano que aporte sus conclusiones acerca de la muerte del activista presuntamente por falta de una apropiada atención médica.
