Case description:

Cuban immigrant, father of four, who died while in custody at a U.S. migrant detention center after an altercation with guards from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). According to a preliminary autopsy report provided to his family by the El Paso County (Texas) Office of the Medical Examiner, the death would be classified as a homicide, caused by asphyxia due to compression of the chest and neck. The autopsy also found the presence of prescription antidepressant and antihistamine medications, adding that Lunas Campos had a history of bipolar disorder and anxiety.  The official version from the U.S. government maintained that the detainee was trying to commit suicide and that staff intervened to save him. However, a witness told The Associated Press that the man died after being handcuffed, taken down by guards, and subjected to a chokehold until he lost consciousness. Lunas Campos had been transferred to the detention center in September 2025, after being arrested by ICE in Rochester, New York, where he had lived for more than two decades after legally entering the United States in 1996, following his arrival in Florida by boat. He had been detained in July 2025 due to a criminal record that made him deportable. New York court records indicate that in 2003 he was convicted of sexual contact with an 11-year-old, a felony for which he served one year in jail and was placed on the state sex offender registry.  Lunas Campos was also sentenced to five years in prison and three years of supervision in 2009 after being convicted of attempting to sell a controlled substance. He completed the sentence in January 2017.

Según un informe preliminar de la autopsia, entregado a su familia por la Oficina del Médico Forense del condado de El Paso (Texas), la muerte sería clasificada como homicidio, causado por asfixia por compresión del pecho y el cuello. 
La autopsia también encontró la presencia de medicamentos antidepresivos y antihistamínicos recetados, agregando que Lunas Campos tenía antecedentes de trastorno bipolar y ansiedad. La versión oficial del gobierno estadounidense sostuvo que el detenido intentaba suicidarse y que el personal intervino para salvarlo. Sin embargo, un testigo declaró a The Associated Press que el hombre murió después de ser esposado, derribado por los guardias y sometido a una llave de estrangulamiento hasta perder el conocimiento.
Lunas Campos había sido trasladado al centro de detención en septiembre de 2025, luego de ser arrestado por ICE en Rochester, Nueva York, donde vivió durante más de dos décadas tras ingresar legalmente a Estados Unidos en 1996, después de llegar a Florida en bote. Había sido detenido en julio de 2025 debido a antecedentes penales que lo hacían deportable. Registros judiciales de Nueva York indican que en 2003 fue declarado culpable de contacto sexual con un menor de 11 años, delito grave por el que cumplió un año de cárcel y fue inscrito en el registro estatal de delincuentes sexuales. También fue sentenciado a cinco años de prisión y tres años de libertad supervisada en 2009 tras ser declarado culpable de intentar vender una sustancia controlada. Cumplió la condena en enero de 2017.
