Case description:

Jimmy Gerardo Castrillo Mairena, a 51-year-old Costa Rican national, had been imprisoned for 10 years on drug trafficking charges at La Condesa in Güines in the Mayabeque province. He passed away on July 11, 2025, at the Salvador Allende Hospital in Havana. His family reported that he had suffered severe physical deterioration. Although the autopsy report issued by Cuban authorities states that Castrillo Mairena died of bronchopneumonia, Yelba M.—his aunt—insists that this finding is false and that her nephew actually died from anemia and tuberculosis, which had been diagnosed belatedly. This diagnosis was verbally conveyed to her by the medical staff who treated her nephew in the Intensive Care Unit at the Salvador Allende Hospital in Havana. "They told me that my nephew had tuberculosis and that the lumps protruding beneath his skin were caused by a protein deficiency. In his final days, he was confined to a wheelchair and looked cadaverous," his aunt notes.

Jimmy Gerardo Castrillo Mairena, ciudadano costarricense de 51 años, había permanecido encarcelado durante 10 años bajo cargos de narcotráfico en el penal La Condesa, en Güines, Mayabeque. Falleció el 11 de julio de 2025 en el Hospital Salvador Allende, en La Habana. Su familia informó que había sufrido un severo deterioro físico. Aunque el informe de la autopsia emitido por las autoridades cubanas establece que Castrillo Mairena murió a causa de una bronconeumonía, Yelba M. —su tía— insiste en que este hallazgo es falso y que, en realidad, su sobrino falleció debido a una anemia y una tuberculosis que fueron diagnosticadas tardíamente. Este diagnóstico le fue comunicado verbalmente por el personal médico que atendió a su sobrino en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos del Hospital Salvador Allende, en La Habana. «Me dijeron que mi sobrino tenía tuberculosis y que los bultos que sobresalían bajo su piel se debían a una deficiencia proteica. En sus últimos días, permaneció postrado en una silla de ruedas y tenía un aspecto cadavérico», denunció su tía.
