Case description:

The young man was detained at the police station in Taguasco, accused of robbing the Sugar Mill Melanio Hernández in Tuinicú, municipality of Taguasco, Sancti Spíritus province. The family rejected the official explanation that he had committed suicide by hanging. When his body was returned to the family for the wake and burial, it had sutures front and back that were not typical of an autopsy. The body was also full of bruises and the tip of the toes and heels were missing. The family believed these were signs of torture and accused the police of murdering him. The mother and two female family members were arrested. The case elicited consternation and support from the local population and there was a heavy State Security deployment to the area.

Fue detenido en la comisaría de Taguasco, acusado de robar el  central azucarero Melanio Hernández en Tuinicú, municipio de Taguasco, provincia de Sancti Spíritus. La familia rechazó la explicación oficial de que se había ahorcado. Cuando su cuerpo fue devuelto a la familia para  tenía suturas delanteras y traseras que no eran típicas de una autopsia. El cuerpo también estaba lleno de moretones y la punta de los dedos de los pies y los talones faltaban. La familia cree que estos son signos de tortura y acusó a la policía de asesinarlo. La madre y dos otros familiares fueron arrestados. El caso provocó consternación y apoyo de la población local y hubo un fuerte despliegue de la Seguridad del Estado en la zona.
