Case description:

Attempted to escape Cuba from Caibarién in the early morning hours of January 28, 1998 ( heading north towards the U.S.) on a 15-foot rustic boat without motor together with her husband and five others (including one woman).  They were caught in a tropical storm and it was rumored in town that they had been seen hiding in nearby keys awaiting for the bad weather to break and that Tania´s husband had returned to town to gather provisions. The group then disappeared with no trace. Tania's family filed a disappearance report and was threatened by authorities. Tania's mother was later persecuted for joining a human rights' group seeking information on disappeared rafters. 
Tania had felt a great need to flee Cuba. In 1991, she had joined a military organization, "Servicio Militar para Mujeres," that promised the female conscripts access to a university career after two years of service. She went to serve in the missile unit of a military unit of the Air Force Defense (DAAFAR (Defensa Anti-Area de las Fuerzas Armadas) in the central region of the country (unit #3702, also known as "la Bayoya."), and handled classified information.  There she met and married a MIG pilot, Vladmir, although it was soon the height of the Special Period in Cuba and he was labeled a traitor as part of a campaign to contain indiscipline in the Armed Forces. The couple plotted to escape the country, but were discovered and the men served five years of prison, although they protected Tania.  She, by then with the rank of Sergeant, was expelled from her job and was denied the opportunity to work again, even as a civilian, or study.  With her husband in prison for two years and requesting their separation, Tania began attempting to escape Cuba and did so eleven times; she was caught and arrested each time and authorities visited her house regularly to threaten her. She then met and married an expert in water sports who had emigrated to the U.S. and had then served prison in Cuba for attempting to fetch his family on the island. They plotted their escape and disappeared.

Intentó escapar de Cuba desde Caibarién en la madrugada del 28 de enero de 1998 (rumbo norte hacia los Estados Unidos) en un bote rústico de 15 pies sin motor junto con su esposo y otras cinco personas (incluida una mujer).
