Case description:

Member of the peaceful opposition group UNPACU imprisoned since June 2016 for "disrespect" and public disobedience after participating in a peaceful protest in Havana. The prosecution was asking for a 4-year prison sentence and he had yet to be tried. Prison authorities informed the family he had died of a heart attack. Four days earlier his wife had visited in prison, found him to have lost around 35 pounds in three weeks and learned that he allegedly had a kidney infection for which he was not receiving medical treatment. Hamell had never had kidney problems. Many current and former political prisoners have reported on the persistent lack of medical attention and the physical and verbal abuses, overcrowding, poor nutrition, terrible sanitary conditions, and undrinkable water that lead to illnesses among the prison population.

El miembro del grupo de oposición UNPACU de 45 años había estado encarcelado desde junio de 2016 por desacato y desobediencia pública después de participar en una protesta pacífica. Mientras esperaba juicio en el cual la fiscalía pediría una sentencia de 4 años de prisión, se informó a la familia que había muerto de un ataque al corazón. Cuatro días antes, su esposa lo había visitado en la cárcel, descubriendo que había perdido alrededor de 35 libras en tres semanas y que supuestamente tenía una infección renal por la cual no estaba recibiendo tratamiento médico. Nunca había tenido problemas renales.
