Case description:

Dyron was doing the cumpulsory military service since May  20, 2009. After completing coursework, he had been assigned to Military Unit 7577, in Managua, Havana, to work in Ordinance, moving heavy equipment at an underground facility. It was very humid, sanitary conditions were very poor and there was a large population of rats and bats; the smell was so intense that it was hard to breath. The recruits had not protective gear and Dyron's boots were broken, so so he had to work barefoot. One day after work, he developed a very strong headache, sore throat, abdominal pain and tremors. Five days later, he was given a pass home and his mother took him to a neighborhood clinic. He was referred to a hospital with an irregular heartbeat and to another hospital, where he was prescribed antibiotics and sent home. The following day, his mother took him to another clinic, where after further tests, he was diagnosed with an acute appendicitis. On February 16, 2010, after 12 days with high fever, his mother took him to the Hermanos Amejeiras hospital, were he died on March 22nd after a number of tests failed to find what ailed him. The death certificate did not indicate cause of death. Military officers pressured the family to not insist on an autopsy report. Another youngster had died in Santiago de Cuba in similar circumstances.

Cumplía el servicio militar obligatorio desde mayo de 2009. Estaba asignado a la Unidad Militar 7577 de Managua, La Habana, donde trabajaba moviendo equipos pesados en una instalación subterránea. Había mucha humedad, condiciones sanitarias muy malas, y muchas ratas y murciélagos. El olor era tan intenso que era difícil respirar. Los soldados no tenían equipo protector y las botas de Dyron estaban rotas; tenía que trabajar descalzo. Un día después del trabajo, desarrolló un fuerte dolor de cabeza, dolor de garganta, dolor abdominal y temblores. A los cinco días le dieron un pase para volver a casa y su madre lo llevó a un policlínico. Fue trasladado a un hospital con latidos irregulares y a otro hospital, donde se le recetó un tratamiento de antibióticos y enviado de vuelta a casa. Al día siguiente, en otra clínica le realizaron más pruebas y diagnosticaron una apendicitis aguda. Pasados 12 días con fiebre alta,  el 16 de febrero de 2010 su madre lo llevó al hospital Hermanos Amejeiras, donde falleció alrededor de un mes más tarde sin que se encontrara qué lo aquejaba a pesar de realizársele numerosas pruebas. El certificado de defunción no indicó su causa de la muerte. Su madre fue presionada por la policía para que no insistiera en los informes de autopsia y la policía acosó a la madre. Expresó su compromiso con denunciar las condiciones en las que se hizo trabajar a su hijo y a tratar de proteger a otros jóvenes reclutas de la misma suerte. Supo que otro joven había muerto en Santiago de Cuba en circunstancias similares.
