Case description:

Cuban soldier killed when 3 recruits  (Alain Forbus, Leandro Cerezo and Yoan Torres) tried to escape from military units 1418 and 1011 at Managua, province of Havana, on April 27, 2007. In addition to killing Gutiérrez, the three recruits injured another soldier with the AKM-47s they had commanded. They intended to hijack an aircraft to escape the country. Forbus was captured, but the other two boarded a mass transit bus at a nearby neighborhood and forced the driver to head to the airport in Havana, taking the eight passengers hostage. At the airport, a shootout ensued but they managed to board an aircraft that did not have a crew on board. The hostages were forced on board the plane. After a standout lasting five days, tear gas was shot into the aircraft. When Cerezo stuck his head out for air he was shot, but survived. The aircraft was then raided by government troops. Lieutenant Colonel Victor Acuña Velázquez, one of the hostages, died during a shootout inside the plane; Cuban authorities reported he had tried to disarm one of the hijackers. In a secret trial the families could not attend, the young recruits, Sergeant Torres Martínez, age 21, Sergeant Leandro Cerezo Sirut, age 20, were sentenced to life in prison.  Two other conscripts who were also planning to desert: Sgt. Karel de Miranda Rubio (age 19) was sentenced to 30 years in prison and Corporal Alain Forbus Lameru (age 20) was sentenced to 25 years; a civilian, Ridel Lescaylle Veloz (age 31), relative of one of the plotters who knew of the plan, was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
Cuban laws forbid citizens from leaving the country without government authorization. Military service is obligatory and its extremely harsh conditions are infamous; deserting is punished severely, including with death.

Soldado cubano que murió cuando 3 reclutas (Alain Forbus, Leandro Cerezo y Yoan Torres) intentaron escapar de las unidades militares 1418 y 1011 en Managua, provincia de La Habana, el 27 de abril de 2007. Además de matar a Gutiérrez, los tres reclutas hirieron a otro soldado. con los AKM-47 que habían conseguido.. Tenían la intención de secuestrar un avión para escapar del país. Forbus fue capturado, pero los otros dos subieron a un autobús de transporte público en un barrio cercano y obligaron al conductor a dirigirse al aeropuerto de La Habana, tomando como rehenes a los ocho pasajeros.
