Case description:

He acquired VIH-AIDS at the 5 1/2 prison in Pinar del Río province and was tranferred to a special prison in Mayabeque province, where he acquired a parasite (candilasis) that prevented him from eating (throat problems) and resulted in other symptoms that went untreated. Since 2012, he was in ill health and was not receiving medical treatment in prison. His mother attempted to get the prison director (Castillo) and doctors and nurses at the prison to get him a specialist or send him home on a medical license, to no avail. It would take months to get him medication and his condition worsened. On November 12, 2012, he was transferred to the National Hospital for Prisoners (Hospital Nacional de Reclusos) at the Combinado del Este prison on Havana. In June 2013, he was referred to the IPK, (Instituto de Medicina Tropical), but they did not take him because it was at capacity with cholera patients. He was admitted instead at the Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico La Dependiente, where he suffered heart failure. On October 10, 2013, they sent him home on medical license; he died eight days later. 
His mother believes he succumbed to medical negligence and sustains that she was kept in the dark about her son's condition.

Adquirió VIH-SIDA en el penal 5 1/2 de la provincia de Pinar del Río y fue trasladado a una prisión especial de la provincia de Mayabeque, donde adquirió un parásito (candilasis) que le impedía comer (problemas de garganta) y le provocaba otros síntomas. para los cuales no fue tratado. Desde 2012, se encontraba mal de salud y no estaba recibiendo tratamiento médico en prisión. Su madre intentó que el director de la prisión (Castillo) y los médicos y enfermeras de la prisión le consiguieran un especialista o lo enviaran a casa con una licencia médica, sin éxito. Tomaba meses conseguirle medicamentos y su condición empeoró. El 12 de noviembre de 2012 fue trasladado al Hospital Nacional de Reclusos del Penal Combinado del Este de La Habana. En junio de 2013 fue referido al IPK, (Instituto de Medicina Tropical), pero no lo atendieron porque estaba lleno con pacientes de cólera. Fue ingresado en el Hospital Clínico Quirúrgico La Dependiente, donde sufrió insuficiencia cardíaca. El 10 de octubre de 2013 lo enviaron a casa con licencia médica; murió ocho días después.
Su madre cree que él sucumbió a negligencia médica y sostiene que no la mantuvieron informada sobre la condición de su hijo.
