Case description:

Victim, with three other men, of murder in an apparent illegal exit attempt gone wrong in a seaside town approximately 20 kilometers west of Havana frequently used to stage escapes from Cuba. They were attacked with clubs, knives, and machetes, and 25 year-old Pedro Luis Rodríguez León escaped, surviving the attack with serious injuries. Cuba's Ministry of the Interior issued successive statements of the incident, informing of six suspects under arrest and identifying the victims. According to reports, eleven persons had for several weeks planned an escape with alleged involvement from abroad. They met on the day of the murders at Playa Baracoa (Ranchón El Yunque) to proceed with the plan, but, apparently, it was a false plot to extort money. Speedboats from the U.S. typically charge $10,000 per escapee, usually paid by families abroad, but the plotters were being asked to pay only $2,000. The survivor declared that they had been set up under false pretenses and that "everything had been planned to kill us." The four victims were buried on June 12, 2014.
