Case description:

The 44-year-old common prisoner died of a reported heart attack, denied medical attention. He had been taken to the provincial hospital of Ciego de Ávila after complaining of chest pain and headaches, where the doctor had ordered he remain on observation. The prison officer, Alberto Arévalo, refused and took him back to prison, where he died in his cell without any medical attention. Martínez Torres had been sentenced to 7 years of prison for robbery with force and had served 18 months.

El recluso de 44 años murió de un supuesto infarto cardíaco sin atención médica. Había sido llevado al hospital provincial de Ciego de Ávila al quejarse de fuertes dolores de cabeza y dolor en el pecho.  A pesar de que el médico de guardia le dijo el oficial de la prisión que el paciente debía permanecer en observación, fue devuelto a la prisión y murió encerrado sin asistencia médica. Martínez Torres estaba sancionado a 7 años de cárcel condenado por robo con fuerza, y había extinguido 18 meses.
