Case description:

A businessman/landowner and prominent citizen of Manzanillo, Cubeñas Ibern was known as anti-Communist. His 23 year old son Ramón Cubeñas Conde had been killed in 1961 in an anti-Castro infiltration mission from overseas. In 1965, Cubeñas Ibern filed a complaint at INRA (Instituto de Reforma Agraria, the government entity managing the Castro government's agrarian reform) for having confiscated his land despite not meeting the plot size that called for confiscation. He was given a citation in Santiago, told his case would be reviewed.  When he arrived, he was arrested and taken to 'El Castillito' prison in Santiago, charged with committing arson against the Pilón Sugar Mill in Manzanillo, conspiring against the government, and spying.  A few days later, government forces searched and ransacked his house and arrested his wife, Maria del Carmen Conde, and accused her of being his co-conspirator. She served two years in prison.
Cubeñas Ibern was tried by a revolutionary tribunal at a public theater in his hometown of Manzanillo, with speakers blasting the proceedings, and was not allowed a defense. He was sentenced to death. During the trial, his demeanor was serene, composed, and firm. He was survived by his wife and his daughter Rosa Maria.

Cubeñas Ibern era un empresario y ciudadano prominente de Manzanillo, provincia de Oriente. Su hijo de 23 años, Ramón Cubeñas Conde, murió en 1961 en una misión de infiltración anticastrista desde el extranjero. En 1965, Cubeñas Ibern presentó una queja en el INRA (Instituto de Reforma Agraria, la entidad gubernamental que administraba la reforma agraria del régimen de Castro) por haber confiscado sus tierras a pesar de no cumplir con el tamaño requerido para la confiscación. Lo citaron para Santiago de Cuba y le dijeron que su caso sería revisado. Cuando llegó, fue arrestado y acusado de realizar un sabotaje contra el central azucarero Pilón en Manzanillo, conspirar contra el gobierno y espiar. Días después, fuerzas del gobierno registraron y saquearon su casa y arrestaron a su esposa, María del Carmen Conde, que fue luego condenada a dos años de prisión.  Cubeñas Ibern fue juzgado por un tribunal revolucionario en un teatro público en su ciudad natal de Manzanillo y no se le permitió una defensa. Fue condenado a muerte. Le sobrevivieron su esposa y su hija Rosa María.
