Case description:

Born at Central Nela, a sugar mill owned by his family in Mayajigua, Las Villas province, Ignacio was the youngest of six children.  He attended Tulane University in New Orleans for one year and then returned to Cuba, to study at the University of Havana, where he completed a degree in Agricultural Engineering and Sugar Chemistry.  He became an active member of the Agrupación Católica Universitaria (ACU). After graduation, he began working as a lab chemist at Central Nela.  Later, he developed a rice farm, a poultry business, two sugar cane farms and a company for the rental of farming equipment.  When the communist regime confiscated his properties and closed private schools, he sent his children to the U.S. under the Catholic Church's Pedro Pan program.  In 1961 he became involved with the CIA to foster a return to democracy in Cuba.  In 1964 he had a chance to leave Cuba, but did not. His wife left in order to reunite with their four children, but Ignacio chose to stay. In April 1968, a day before he was to undergo colon cancer surgery, he was arrested and sent to the infamous G-2 police headquarters for interrogation. Accused of "conspiracy to overthrow the government," instead of being sent to La Cabaña prison to await trial, he was taken to the Navy Hospital due to his deteriorating health. He was then sentenced to life in prison but died at the Navy Hospital on November 2, 1968.

Nació en el Central Nela, un ingenio propiedad de su familia en Mayajigua, provincia de Las Villas, era el menor de seis hermanos. Asistió a la Universidad de Tulane en Nueva Orleans durante un año y luego regresó a Cuba, para estudiar en la Universidad de La Habana, donde se graduó como Ingeniero Agrónomo y Químico del Azúcar. Se convirtió en miembro activo de la Agrupación Católica Universitaria (ACU). Después de graduarse, comenzó a trabajar como químico de laboratorio en el Central Nela. Posteriormente desarrolló una finca de arroz, un negocio avícola, dos fincas de caña de azúcar y una empresa de alquiler de equipos agrícolas. Cuando el régimen comunista confiscó sus propiedades y cerró las escuelas privadas, envió a sus hijos a los Estados Unidos bajo el programa Pedro Pan de la Iglesia Católica. En 1961 se involucró con la CIA para promover el retorno a la democracia en Cuba. En 1964 tuvo la oportunidad de salir de Cuba, pero no lo hizo. Su esposa se fue para reunirse con sus cuatro hijos, pero Ignacio decidió quedarse. En abril de 1968, un día antes de ser sometido a una cirugía de cáncer de colon, fue arrestado y enviado a la infame comisaría de policía G-2 para ser interrogado. Acusado de "conspiración para derrocar al gobierno", en lugar de ser enviado a la cárcel de La Cabaña a la espera de juicio, fue trasladado al Hospital de la Marina debido a su deterioro de salud. Luego fue condenado a cadena perpetua pero murió en el Hospital de la Armada el 2 de noviembre de 1968.
