Case description:

Gonzalo, who was mentally ill, was serving a 30 year prison sentence for murder. He committed suicide by ingesting psychotropic drugs. Two days before he had been transferred to a punishment cell, where prisoners are kept in solitary confinement sometimes for years. From there, he had sent a note to a relative who serving time in the same prison indicating he had told guards that he was mentally ill (with paranoia) and was going to commit suicide if he was not released from punishment. Other prisoners also reported he had stated the same, yet prison authorities ignored him. He had turned 24 the day before he committed suicide.

Gonzalo, que padecía de enfermedades mentales, cumplía una sentencia de 30 años de prisión por asesinato. Se suicidó ingiriendo drogas psicotrópicas. Dos días antes había sido trasladado a una celda de castigo, donde los prisioneros se mantienen aislados algunas veces durante años. A partir de ahí, había enviado una nota a un pariente que estaba cumpliendo condena en la misma prisión, indicando que le había dicho a los guardias que estaba enfermo mental (con paranoia) e iba a suicidarse si no le quitaban el castigo. Otros presos también informaron que él había declarado lo mismo, pero las autoridades de la prisión lo ignoraron. Había cumplido 24 años el día antes de suicidarse.
