Case description:

Auto mechanic arrested in 1989 for writing anti-Castro graffiti and displaying a defiant attitude towards the Cuban system who had served a one-year sentence at Prince Castle prison in 1972 (held with common criminals). He was confined in the psychiatric hospital known as Mazorra, at the Carbó-Serviá ward for political dissidents, for an alleged evaluation despite having no history of mental illness. Government authorities claimed he committed suicide by hanging and that his body had been doused with gasoline and set on fire by mentally-ill patients. His mother claims that the presence of gasoline in a hospital ward points to the participation of hospital authorities. Government agents prevented the family from having an open casket at the funeral.

Disidente que había cumplido una condena de un año en 1972, fue arrestado nuevamente en 1989 por escribir grafiti anticastrista y enviado al pabellón para presos políticos en el hospital psiquiátrico conocido como Mazorra, presuntamente para una evaluación, a pesar de no tener antecedente de enfermedades mentales. Las autoridades gubernamentales afirmaron que se suicidó ahorcándose mientras estaba detenido y que su cuerpo había sido quemado por otros pacientes con enfermedades mentales.
