Case description:

A prisoner who was serving a 3.5 year sentence for "sacrificing cattle" for killing a horse he owned. He died after a severe beating by prison guards at Canaleta prison. His family reported that his body was full of bruises and contusions in the back, legs, and eyes, that he had four broken teeth, and that his lips were broken in seven places. He was rushed to the Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy Provincial Hospital in Colón in the province of Matanzas, where he died shortly after arrival. The hospital issued a death certificate listing the cause of death as bacterial pneumonia. His mother, crying, declared to an independent journalist in Cuba"  "They murdered him."  The family presented a formal complaint to authorities.

Un preso que cumplía una condena de 3,5 años por "sacrificar ganado" por matar a un caballo de su propiedad. Murió luego de una fuerte golpiza por parte de los guardias de la prisión de Canaleta. Su familia informó que su cuerpo estaba lleno de hematomas y contusiones en la espalda, piernas y ojos, que tenía cuatro dientes rotos y que tenía los labios rotos en siete lugares. Fue trasladado de urgencia al Hospital Provincial Dr. Mario Muñoz Monroy de Colón en la provincia de Matanzas, donde falleció poco después de su llegada. El hospital emitió un certificado de defunción que enumeraba la causa de la muerte como neumonía bacteriana. Su madre, llorando, declaró a un periodista independiente en Cuba "Lo asesinaron". La familia presentó una denuncia formal a las autoridades.
