Case description:

Parera and his family had been staunch revolutionaries against the Batista regime, but had become disaffected with the actions of the Castro government. The year before his detention and murder, Parera had resigned from his post as head of the Radio and TV station of State Security in Holguín, refusing to continue collaborating with the government. He was arrested and held incommunicado at State Security headquarters for three months, accused of being a “counter-revolutionary.” One day, police showed up at his family's home to inform them that he had died. That night, an ambulance delivered the body. No explanation was given, and a death certificate was not provided. The authorities said they would return with documents, but never did. A forensic specialist who was a family friend examined the body. Parera's hands were burned and he had swallowed his tongue. He is presumed to have died of asphyxia after receiving electroshocks (torture). He left a wife, a son about six months old, and a daughter about three years old.

Parera y su familia habían sido firmes revolucionarios contra el régimen de Batista, pero se desencantaron con las acciones del gobierno de Castro. El año anterior a su detención y asesinato, Parera había renunciado a su puesto como jefe de la estación de radio y televisión de la Seguridad del Estado en Holguín, negándose a seguir colaborando con el gobierno. Lo arrestaron y lo mantuvieron incomunicado en la sede de la Seguridad del Estado durante tres meses, acusado de ser un "contrarrevolucionario". Un día, la policía se presentó en la casa de su familia para informarles que había muerto. Esa noche, una ambulancia entregó el cadáver. No se dio ninguna explicación, y no se proporcionó un certificado de defunción. Las autoridades dijeron que volverían con los documentos, pero nunca lo hicieron. Un especialista forense que era  amigo de la familia examinó el cuerpo. Las manos de Parera estaban  quemadas y él se había tragado la lengua. Se presume que murió de asfixia después de recibir descargas eléctricas (tortura). Dejó una esposa, un hijo de unos seis meses y una hija de unos tres años.
