Case description:

Cuban navy frigate commander killed by a subordinate with with his own gun, which he had reportedly left unattended. A group of young recruits, apparently with a second vessel as part of the conspiracy to escape, attempted to hijack his frigate, a torpedo ship LC 274, to flee Cuba to the United States. After Lt. Caro, was shot and killed, a struggle and shooting ensued and several sailors were injured or killed. Some were reportedly forced to jump into high seas and left there to die. The survivors brought back to shore were tried by a military tribunal and sentenced to death.
Lt. Caro had joined the revolutionary militia in 1959 and in 1960 is recruited for training for the Armed Forces and sent to the Soviet Union for six months to specialize in mines. He later undertakes a naval training course and graduates as a frigate commander in March 1965, soon rising to squadron commander.
