Case description:

Died of dehydration hours before his group was rescued. He had  left the fishing town of Manzanillo on Cuba's southeast coast on August 7, 2014 with 31 other passengers to seek a new life in the United States aboard a homemade boat of pieces of wood and metal planks with a automobile diesel motor tied to an improvised propeller. The motor broke down after a couple of days near Grand Cayman and a few of the men headed back to Cuba on the third day in an improvised raft made of tires tied together. They had hoped to reach the Florida coast, but strong winds pushed the craft westward.  They ran out of food on the 4th day and begged crafts from Cuba that passed them for help, but they were ignored. The craft drifted for three weeks and the desperate occupants had no food and water (some drank salt water and their own urine, and/or blood extracted with syringes).  One by one, many died of dehydration, the survivors left with no option but to throw the bodies overboard. Spotted by a fishing boat some 80 miles northeast of Yucatán, the Mexican navy rescued them 150 miles off the Yucatan peninsula. Of the seventeen rescued, two subsequently died at a Mexican hospital. The survivors were detained and initially told by Mexican authorities they would be deported to Cuba, but were later released. Murió de deshidratación después de haber salido del pueblo pesquero de Manzanillo, en la costa sureste de Cuba, el 7 de agosto de 2014 con otras 31 personas para buscar una nueva vida en los Estados Unidos a bordo de un barco casero hecho de trozos de madera y tablones metálicos con un motor diesel de automóvil atado a una hélice improvisada. El motor se rompió después de un par de días cerca de Gran Caimán y algunos de los hombres se dirigieron de regreso a Cuba tres días después de haber salido, en una balsa improvisada hecha de varios neumáticos que habían sido atados juntos. El plan original había sido llegar a la costa de la Florida, pero fuertes vientos empujaron la nave hacia el oeste. Se quedaron sin comida en el cuarto día y pidieron ayuda a varios barcos que venían de Cuba y les pasaron cerca, pero fueron ignorados. La embarcación se alejó durante tres semanas y los ocupantes desesperados porque no tenían comida y agua (algunos bebían agua salada y su propia orina y / o sangre extraída con jeringas). Uno por uno, muchos murieron de deshidratación, los sobrevivientes no tuvieron otra opción que lanzar los cuerpos por la borda.
